Nike sells $80M worth of one retro Air Jordan — in three hours

Nike sold $80 million of a single style of Air Jordan shoes during a roughly three-hour period on Dec. 20, according to new data from SportScanInfo.

The Air Jordan XI "Legend Blue" released that morning. It was quickly sold out through Nike's website and at numerous retail stores. The shoe is a retro version of a shoe that originally released in 1995.

Nike sold 342,015 pairs at major retailers at an average price of $179.80, according to SportScanInfo. It sold an additional 137,751 pairs in kids sizes at an average price of $142.24.

Combined, that's more than $81 million within three hours in one morning. To put that in perspective, some Oregon public companies don't have annual sales that high.

It's also likely that Nike's actual sales figure for the limited-edition release is much higher. SportScanInfo tracks sales at major retailers, such as Foot Locker, but it's unclear whether its data includes sales at Nike's own brick-and-mortar and online store.

The "Jordan business continues to be superb," said Sterne Agee analyst Sam Poser, in a note to investors that cited the SportScanInfo data.

The Business Of Michael Jordan Is Thriving On Ebay

Michael Jordan has been out of the NBA as a player since his retirement from the Washington Wizards in 2003. Yet by at least one measure, it is like the six-time champion never left.

Annual sales of Jordan products on eBay EBAY -0.83% were $175 million over the past 12-months fueled by Nike’s Air Jordan line. LeBron James is the second best-selling athlete on the online auction site with $42 million worth of goods sold, followed by Kobe Bryant in third at $25.5 million, according to Terapeak, which is the leading analytics provider for eBay. NBA players outpace stars in other sports partly due to sales of their signature shoe lines.

How does MJ stake up in the world outside of sports? For comparison, the annual Apple iPad market is $198 million on eBay, while the markets for Apple MacBooks/laptops ($160 million) and Apple iPods ($66 million) are both smaller. “That a single person’s name drives sales at this level suggests a very strong brand,” says Terapeak consultant Aron Hsiao.

Terapeak took a deeper look for Forbes at Jordan sales on eBay in the 90 days from early August to the end of October. There were more than 300,000 Jordan items purchased at an average price of $124 for total sales of $39.5 million. Air Jordans made up just over half the listings with 161,623 pairs sold at an average price of $185. Sellers labeled 59% of Air Jordans in “new” condition, as the shoes never leave the box for many collectors. Sales of James’ Nike signature shoes racked up $6.7 million of sales on eBay over the same three months.

Jordan’s non-shoe business was $9.7 million on eBay between August and October or almost six times the sales of James’ merchandise. More than 150,000 non-shoe MJ items sold at an average price of $62 with trading cards the dominant item. Prices can reach much, much higher for the rarest items. A 1986 autographed Fleer rookie card sold for $40,000 and 10 cards in total sold for at least $11,500 over the three months on eBay. The sale of a game-worn jersey/shorts combo from Jordan’s final season with the Bulls hit $35,000, while game-worn shoes from the 1995-96 season fetched $15,000.

The Jordan Brand is one of the strongest in sports and generates $2 billion in annual revenue for its parent Nike. Jordan’s market share in basketball shoes is north of 50%, and MJ’s annual royalty checks from Nike made him the highest-paid retired athlete in the world with earnings of $90 million last year. Years of rich endorsement deals plus soaring valuations of NBA franchises—Jordan owns 90% of the Charlotte Hornets—led Forbes to tab Jordan as a billionaire in June.

Man Arrested For Stealing 7,500 LeBron '12' Shoes

A man from Memphis was charged with stealing a truck containing $1.5 million worth of LeBron ’12’ shoes, produced by Nike.

Next time some creepy guy asks if you want cheap LeBrons, maybe ask him the source, lest you be one of the people to buy shoes from someone like Charles Jennings out of Memphis. Jennings stole a truck full of unreleased Lebron sneakers and was in the process of selling them when he was arrested for theft.

ESPN reports, ‘In early November, police say Charles Jennings, an employee of cargo transportation company Intermodal Cartage Group, used his ID card to get into a secure lot and drive away with the valuable shoes.’

“He had a pretty good idea what he had,” assistant chief of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Mark Dunbar said. “They were Nikes and they were more valuable in that they hadn’t been released yet.”

Jennings had built up a little black market shoe ring for about a week before getting busted. He is currently free on $75,000 bond.

The LeBron ’12’ shoes were initially intended for October release, but that was delayed thanks to a cosmetic issue. Now with the release looming, it looks like Jennings tried to take matters in his own hands. Now he’ll pay a steep penalty for the indiscretion.

Kobe tops Jordan on NBA scoring list

MINNEAPOLIS -- Kobe Bryant surpassed Michael Jordan on the NBA's all-time scoring list Sunday and moved into third place behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone.

The Los Angeles Lakers star, now in his 19th season, passed the Chicago Bulls legend (32,292 points) and the player to whom he has long been compared with a free throw in the second quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center.

"I'm just honored to be here, man, to still be playing," Bryant said. "I appreciate being able to play this long. Careers normally don't last this long. I really appreciate the opportunity to still be out there playing and performing and doing what I do."

Bryant, 36, entered Sunday's 100-94 win eight points shy of Jordan's mark. He finished with 26 points on 7-of-20 shooting to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Bryant now trails only Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) and Malone (36,928) in career NBA points.

For Bryant, the milestone is no small feat, as he forged his Hall of Fame career in Jordan's shadow, with every achievement measured against his idol, almost since the day Bryant entered the league in 1996 at the age of 18.

"I congratulate Kobe on reaching this milestone," Jordan told the Associated Press in a statement. "He's obviously a great player, with a strong work ethic and has an equally strong passion for the game of basketball. I've enjoyed watching his game evolve over the years, and I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next."

"He knows how much I've learned from him," Bryant said of Jordan. "From the other legends, but him in particular."

Phil Jackson coached both players in the NBA. he won six titles with Jordan's Bulls and five with Bryant's Lakers, and he wrote in his book "Eleven Rings" that Bryant was "hell-bent on surpassing Jordan as the greatest player in the game."

Bryant disputes Jackson's claim and has downplayed topping Jordan's scoring total for weeks. "It's really not a big deal to say I passed him for something like that," Bryant said. "It's a great accomplishment, but the true beauty is in the journey."

LeBron James, who grew up admiring Bryant, was one of many who took to Twitter to congratulate the future Hall of Famer.
