Lebron, MJ at Odds over Shortening Season

Fans and basketball historians alike have often wondered about the outcome of a fictional matchup between Michael Jordan and Lebron James. However, a hot topic of discussion in NBA circles has put them on opposing sides of a very real disagreement.
The Cavaliers forward is among several prominent NBA players who have come out in favor of shortening the NBA regular season from 82 games to 66 games. Players have also expressed interest in limiting the practice of playing games on back-to-back nights.
The NBA is experimenting with ways to limit the wear and tear on players’ bodies from a season that can stretch from early November to mid-June, including playoffs. One such proposal is to shorten games to 44 minutes from 48, but when asked if he viewed that as a viable option, James said, “No. It’s not the minutes, it’s the games, the minutes doesn’t mean anything…it’s just too many games.”
Addressing James’ comments Thursday, Jordan, who currently holds majority ownership of the Charlotte Hornets franchise, expressed strong disagreement.
“As an owner who played the game, I loved playing. If I wasn’t playing 82 games, I still would’ve been playing somewhere else because that’s the love for the game I had. As a player, I never thought 82 games was an issue,” said Jordan. “If that’s what they want to do, we as owners and players can evaluate it and talk about it……Are they ready to give up money to play fewer games? That’s the question.”
Clearly, Jordan and James do not see eye-to-eye, which could set the stage for contention in the future as players and owners approach the end of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Michael Jordan is Now a Billionaire

According to Forbes, Michael Jordan is now a billionaire due to an increase in his stake of the Charlotte Hornets to 89.5% from 80%. Sports bankers say the Hornets are presently worth between $600 million and $625 million USD. The Milwaukee Bucks sold for $550 million USD in May, and they are considered the least valuable team in the league. Forbes‘ net worth figure for Jordan uses the $600 million figure. The Hornets have $135 million USD of debt, which makes Jordan’s equity in the team worth $416 million USD. After subtracting all the cash Jordan has invested in the team, they estimate his net worth outside of the Hornets to be $600 million USD, giving him a net worth of a $1 billion USD.

Kobe Bryant vs Michael Jordan - Identical Plays: The Last Dance

The True Story Behind Michael Jordan’s NBA-Banned Sneakers

The tale behind Michael Jordan and the veto prescribed by the NBA on a certain pair of Air Jordan basketball shoes is the stuff of sneaker and basketball folklore. To date, fans understood that Jordan was fined the amount of $5,000 at least once for donning footwear that didn’t comply with the NBA’s uniform regulations, which stated “A player must wear shoes that not only matched their uniforms, but matched the shoes worn by their teammates.” Of course, the Jumpman himself wearing any Nike-branded goods during gameplay was great advertisement for the Beaverton crew and as the story goes, MJ continued wearing these banned sneakers, while Nike picked up any fees incurred.
Here is where things get confusing. As a complete record does not exist showing which shoes Jordan wore during his rookie year in 1984, we can only look to photos, and a certain letter penned by NBA Executive Vice President at the time, Russ Granik, speaking on a pair of “red and black Nike Basketball shoes” that broke the NBA’s dress code. The Air Jordan 1 seemed to be a safe guess, in terms of which specific sneaker caught the ban, as this was the first silhouette in Jordan’s signature model lineage. Sneaker nerds from the Internet have now unveiled that Nike’s Air Jordan 1 was not in fact the banned shoe, rather it was the Nike Air Ship, a pair that remains based in slight obscurity, thanks to the fact that it has never been rereleased.
This important chapter in Jordan Brand‘s history is still a bit unclear, especially on Nike’s side of things. Was the whole thing Nike’s idea? Did they actually foot the bill? Why haven’t these iconic sneakers – that do bear a striking resemblance to the Air Jordan 1 – been included in a retro release?

What If Michael Jordan Chose adidas?

You might think that indulging in make-believe is just silly child’s play, but sometimes it’s fun to sit back and wonder “What If…?” Well, that’s exactly what the guys at Sneaker Freaker have been doing with their time, and they’ve tackled one of the biggest turning points in sneakerdom – the genesis of Michael Jordan‘s relationship with Nike and the birth of the most successful sneaker franchise in history.
It’s a known fact that Michael, a lifelong adidas devotee, was pretty reluctant to commit to Nike in the early days. He’s even been quoted as saying that if adidas had come up with a bid anywhere near Nike’s then he would’ve signed with them. Sadly for the Germans, they passed up on the chance, but in a clever bit of well-researched storytelling writer Anthony Costa supposes what the world would have been like if they’d pushed that little bit harder to get MJ23 in the Three Stripes.
