5 Things You Probably Don't Know About the NBA Finals

1) Nearly Half of History's NBA Finals Featured the Lakers

The first NBA finals was in 1947. The Lakers franchise started out in Minneapolis Minnesota and moved to Los Angeles in 1960. Since 1947 the Lakers have attended 31 NBA Finals out of a total 68. That’s a whopping 45%!  Of those 31 appearances they won 15 championships.
The franchise with the next most appearances is the Boston Celtics, with 21.

2) In the 60's Boston Won 8 Finals in a Row
Their streak of 8 in a row is by far the best streak in NBA Finals history.  Led by the legendary Bill Russell, the Celtics won every championship from 1959 to 1966.  This is considered one of the most dominant dynasties in all of American sports.

3) Many Franchises Have Never Been to a Finals

The franchises are:
The Clippers: 44 Seasons
The Nuggets: 38 Seasons
The Timberwolves: 25 Seasons
The Bobcats/Hornets: 24 Seasons
The Grizzlies: 19 Seasons
The Raptors: 19 Seasons
The Hornets/Pelicans: 12 Seasons

4) The Highest TV Ratings Were During the Jordan Era

Michael Jordan brought excitement to the game, and with that came higher TV ratings.
The highest rated NBA finals series was in 1998.  Jordan's second threepeat reached a rating of 18.7, as the Bulls defeated the Utah Jazz in 6 games.

5) The Finals Have Had Repeated Matchups 11 Times.

This stat is when 2 teams reach the finals, and then those same 2 teams reach the finals again the very next year.
The most recent example of this is the 2013 and 2014 finals, which both featured the Miami Heat in the east and the San Antonio Spurs in the West.
The most common rematch is between the Lakers and Celtics, which has happened in back to back years 4 times.
